Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, has condemned the conduct of Senegal players and members of their coaching staff following the chaotic conclusion to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Infantino stated that “violence and walk-offs have no place in football” after the highly contentious encounter, which saw Senegal defeat hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time to lift their second AFCON title.

“Unacceptable Scenes” Despite Senegal’s Triumph
While congratulating Senegal on their success, Infantino criticised the behaviour witnessed during the final, both on and off the pitch.
“We also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands,” Infantino said. “We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members.
“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport. It is simply not right.”

Respect for Match Officials Emphasised
Infantino, who was seen speaking with Senegal captain Sadio Mané during the trophy presentation, stressed that teams must respect the authority of match officials.
“We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play,” he added. “Anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”
Penalty Controversy Sparks Walk-Off
The final was marred by controversy after a disputed late penalty decision in favour of Morocco prompted Senegalese players to abandon the pitch in protest, leading to a temporary suspension of the match and angry scenes involving match officials.
Following a delay of about 20 minutes, the Senegal players returned to the field. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz subsequently missed the penalty, with his Panenka attempt comfortably saved by former Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, pushing the game into extra time.
CAF Opens Review
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has since confirmed it is reviewing footage of the incident, with disciplinary proceedings expected to follow.
In a statement, CAF said it “condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” and confirmed that all relevant footage is being reviewed, with the matter to be referred to the appropriate bodies for further action against those found culpable.
