Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM) has welcomed 8,603 new students, comprising 7,059 undergraduate regular students, 215 sandwich students, and 1,938 postgraduate students.
In a welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Itodo reiterated the institution’s commitment to producing graduates with strong character and academic excellence.
The university, formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, was renamed to honour the late Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, a legendary statesman known for selfless service and visionary leadership.
The University don urged students to carry on with the legacy of the legendary stateman, focusing on solving problems and driving innovation in food security and technology.
Professor Itodo warned students against social vices, including cultism, examination malpractice, and drug abuse, stressing that the university has zero tolerance for such behaviours.

He urged students to prioritize academic rigor and choose their associations wisely.
While the matriculation ceremony marked the beginning of a journey that shape the students’ future, Professor Itodo expressed the hope that they would leave JOSTUM as “Tarka’s Giants,” equipped to contribute to national development and lead the world.
He said, “The university is committed to providing world-class education, with state-of-the-art facilities and resources available to students, encouraging them to take advantage of these resources to achieve academic excellence.”
The university boss emphasized character and learning as reflected in its mission to produce graduates who are not only academically sound but also morally upright.
“I want to urge all the matriculating students to be reminded of their responsibility to uphold the institution’s values and Integrity which will help them to contribute to the growth of the State and Country after their graduation”
“The matriculation oath represents a sacred bond between students and the university, outlining expectations and responsibilities.
“I want to also commend Parents and guardians for trusting JOSTUM with their children and urged them to maintain close interest in their children’s academic progress.
“Your matriculation today has marked a significant milestone in your academic journey, as you embark on a path to become future leaders and innovators.”
