Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has described Nigeria’s bronze medal triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup (AFCON) of Nations as the product of collective effort, following his decisive penalty saves against Egypt.
Nwabali delivered a heroic performance as Nigeria defeated Egypt 4–2 on penalties in Casablanca to secure third place at the AFCON 2025 tournament. The goalkeeper was named Man of the Match after saving two spot-kicks in the shootout.
Speaking after the match, the elated Nigerian shot-stopper said the victory was built on teamwork rather than individual brilliance.
“It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team. Nobody wanted to make a mistake,” Nwabali said.
He explained that composure proved crucial during the penalty shootout.
“I stayed calm, read the takers and trusted my instincts. Thankfully, it worked for us,” he added.
Nwabali also credited Nigeria’s defensive organisation and unity for the win.
“This victory came from collective effort. The defenders were incredible, and everyone stayed united,” he noted.
The goalkeeper stressed that personal accolades mattered less than the team’s achievement.
“Being Man of the Match feels good, but winning the bronze medal for Nigeria matters more,” he said.
He further praised the Super Eagles’ resilience after earlier disappointment in the tournament.
“We had setbacks, but we stayed focused and believed in ourselves until the end,” Nwabali concluded.
