President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for winning the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco following their 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt after a goalless draw at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on Saturday.
The victory marked Nigeria’s ninth AFCON bronze medal, extending their remarkable record of never losing a third-place playoff at the tournament.

After regulation time ended without a goal, the Super Eagles held their nerve in the shootout to defeat Egypt and secure a record-extending ninth bronze finish.
Incidentally, Nigeria’s first third-place victory at the AFCON also came against Egypt, a 3–2 win in Addis Ababa 50 years ago. Egypt, by contrast, have now claimed six bronze medals.
In a statement released by the Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the achievement as a “bronze that feels like gold,” praising the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.
“This bronze medal surely feels good like gold. Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles and our national team players,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended the players for bouncing back from the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco, where Nigeria were eliminated on penalties.
He said the team demonstrated determination, persistence and the renowned Nigerian can-do spirit throughout the competition.
“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off,” Tinubu said.
