In the first quarter of 2025, the Lagos state government introduced speed limit monitors with fines attached for motorists who violate them.
They partnered with Huawei Technologies to install four Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites for monitoring traffic and speed violations like red-light running and illegal U-turns.
The ITS integrates advanced technologies like high-definition traffic cameras, smart sensors, and real-time data analytics that monitor traffic patterns, detect congestion, and provide instant updates to traffic authorities, ensuring faster response times and better road management.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos state commissioner of transportation, announced the development, stating that the system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce the rate of accidents on the road.

Osiyemi also stated that the ITS sites are divided into two categories: checkpoint sites for speed monitoring and e-police sites for traffic violation detection.
The federal government has also inaugurated a new CCTV control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge to monitor traffic and enforce the 80 km/h speed limit.
The control centre was commissioned by David Umahi, minister of works, who said it is part of President Bola Tinubu’s wider plan to fix and protect key federal bridges across the country.
The centre is equipped with high-definition cameras that monitor both the surface of the bridge and its underwater sections. It also comes with a surveillance boat and two Hilux vehicles to respond quickly to any emergency.
The surveillance system is designed to enhance security, curb dangerous driving, prevent suicide attempts, and ensure adherence to traffic regulations.
It also includes speed cameras that capture the details (picture and number plate) of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, and a fine of N50,000 for violators and N20,000 for running red lights.

Other locations with speed limits in the state include Allen Avenue junction (50 km/h), Nurudeen-Oluwopopo road (60 km/h), Alapere-Ogudu road (80km/h), and Nitel on Mobolaji-Bank-Anthony way (60 km/h).
They are also placed at Ojota bridge (by Motorway) (50 km/h), Lekki-Ikoyi bridge (50 km/h to 60 km/h), Ikorodu road (various locations) (50 km/h to 60 km/h), Oshodi-Apapa Expressway (50 km/h to 60 km/h), Epe expressway (80 km/h), and Murtala Mohammed International Airport road (60 km/h).
The state government warned that motorists caught violating traffic laws at these locations will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines.
