The Katsina State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has concluded plans to organise a special lecture in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the death of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria.
The event, scheduled to be held on Thursday, 15th January 2026, is part of activities marking six decades since the late statesman was assassinated during the military coup of January 15, 1966, an event that also brought an end to Nigeria’s parliamentary system of government.
In a statement signed by Tukur Hassan Dan-Ali, the Chairman of the NUJ Katsina State Council, which was made available to newsmen on Monday in Katsina, noted that Sir Ahmadu Bello remains one of the most influential leaders in Nigeria’s history, particularly for his role in fostering unity, development, and administrative stability in Northern Nigeria.

According to the statement, journalists in the state consider it important to continually remind Nigerians, especially younger generations, of the legacies and sacrifices of past leaders whose contributions shaped the nation.
“As journalists, we observed that history has recorded the tremendous achievements of Sir Ahmadu Bello as Premier of Northern Nigeria, especially his efforts towards uniting the people of the region,” the statement said.
The Katsina NUJ Council further described the lecture as part of its commitment to promoting historical awareness, national unity, and the ideals of truth and justice, which form the union’s motto.
Sir Ahmadu Bello, widely revered as the Sardauna of Sokoto, is remembered for laying strong administrative, educational, and social foundations in Northern Nigeria, many of which continue to influence governance and development in the region today.
