Security was tightened around the Kano Government House on Monday amid speculation that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be considering a defection from his party.
Multiple security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), deployed operatives around the seat of power, creating an unusual security presence in and around the complex.
Armoured personnel carriers were stationed at key access points, including the main gate and the roundabout leading into the Government House, while security personnel subjected movement into the area to stricter checks and identification procedures.

There was no official explanation for the security build-up. However, political circles in the state have been abuzz with reports that Yusuf is weighing a move to the All Progressives Congress.
Residents reported heightened tension in surrounding neighbourhoods. A report bby The Cable cited a source saying that the security presence affected daily activities, with some schools dismissing pupils earlier than scheduled and traffic congestion building up on adjoining roads.
“Some schools closed early after parents were contacted to pick up their wards ahead of the usual 3 p.m. closing time,” the source said. “When I passed the area, traffic had already started building up around the Government House and nearby roads.”
In December 2025, supporters of former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, under the banner of the Kwankwasiyya movement, publicly urged both Kwankwaso and Yusuf to defect to the APC.
