The Lagos state government has expressed condolences to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over the death of her son, Nkanu, and ordered an independent investigation into allegations of medical negligence surrounding the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the government said the tragic incident occurred on January 6, 2026, at a private healthcare facility in Lagos, following concerns raised publicly by Adichie over the circumstances leading to her son’s death.
On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, the state commiserated with Adichie and her family, describing the death of a child as a profound and irreparable loss. The government said it shared in the family’s grief and assured them of its commitment to justice.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, according to the statement, has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to immediately commence a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the incident to determine both the immediate and remote causes of death.
In line with the directive, HEFAMAA has begun its inquiry and has already visited the facility involved as part of the ongoing investigation. The agency is expected to conduct a comprehensive review of all allegations and reports relating to the case.
The government reiterated that it places the highest value on human life and maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct in any health facility operating within the state, whether public or private.
HEFAMAA, which is statutorily empowered to regulate, monitor and accredit health facilities in Lagos, said the investigation would examine compliance with established clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved.
The agency will also work in collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a holistic and credible review process.
According to the statement, the findings of the investigation will be made public at the conclusion of the process in the interest of transparency and public accountability. The government warned that any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct or regulatory violations would face appropriate sanctions under existing laws.
While the probe is ongoing, the Lagos State Government urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, noting that due process would be followed to ensure fairness and justice.
The statement, signed by Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, the special adviser to the governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyem reaffirmed the state’s commitment to safeguarding the health, safety and rights of residents and to strengthening oversight of medical practice to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
