Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances of securing victory in Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash against Algeria at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
The high-stakes encounter will kick off at 5pm Nigerian time, with both sides aiming to book a place in the semi-finals.
“It’s crucial for me to maintain focus on the pitch. While energy matters, the mindset is paramount. Our group will remain united,” Chelle said.

“This match is critical against a formidable opponent. We are in the process of determining our game plan. I hold a deep respect for this Algerian team; their staff operates with exceptional professionalism.
I’m not dwelling on revenge for 2019. My priority is to compete fiercely and secure qualification.”
History and Rivalry
Algeria won the last AFCON meeting between the two teams, a dramatic 2019 semi-final at the Cairo International Stadium, when Riyad Mahrez scored a stoppage-time free-kick from the edge of the box to seal victory, leaving goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi with no chance.
The Super Eagles have not beaten the North African side since a 3–1 win in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in November 2016.
Algeria Confident of Extending Dominance
Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković is confident his side has the quality and mentality to extend its strong recent record against Nigeria.
“The most important thing is the state of mind. It all starts from there, and from that point of view, we are irreproachable,” the Bosnian-Swiss coach said.
“We have the reliability and the quality. Tomorrow, we need to be just as good defensively as offensively. That will be paramount. All the details will matter against Nigeria. Nothing should be left to chance. We believe in ourselves, and we just have to play a big game.”
