The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on stakeholders to provide input on two newly released regulatory draft documents aimed at shaping the country’s communications sector over the next five years and promoting the rollout of ultra-high-speed wireless services.
In a public notice issued recently under its powers in the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, the Commission announced the publication of the Draft Five-Year Spectrum Roadmap (2025–2030) and the Draft Guidelines for the Use of the 60 GHz License-Exempt Band for Multi-Gigabit Wireless Systems. Both documents are now available for public review on the NCC’s website.
The Draft Spectrum Roadmap outlines the Commission’s strategic plans for spectrum allocation, management, and planning through 2030.
Its goal is to ensure efficient spectrum use, support emerging technologies, expand broadband coverage, and align Nigeria’s spectrum policy with international best practices.
The second document provides a regulatory framework for deploying high-capacity, short-range wireless systems in the 60 GHz band.
This spectrum, capable of delivering multi-gigabit speeds, is expected to support next-generation applications, including high-density urban broadband, fixed wireless access, enterprise networks, and backhaul connectivity.
Under section 58 of the NCA 2003, the NCC is inviting input from industry stakeholders, telecom operators, equipment manufacturers, consumer groups, and the general public. Comments and suggestions should be submitted electronically by Friday, January 16, 2025, to ygibrahim@ncc.gov.ng, yabdulkadir@ncc.gov.ng, and jdavid@ncc.gov.ng.
The Commission emphasized that stakeholder contributions will be vital in refining these frameworks to ensure that Nigeria’s spectrum policies encourage innovation, attract investment, foster competition, and drive sustainable growth in the communications sector.
