Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher set to take charge on an interim basis for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
The club confirmed on Monday that it had parted ways with Amorim following Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds United, a result that left Man United sixth in the Premier League table.
The 40-year-old Portuguese tactician spent 14 months at Old Trafford after arriving in English football in November 2024.
United announced that Fletcher has been appointed interim head coach, while Amorim’s entire backroom staff have also departed the club.
During his tenure, Amorim recorded a modest return of 1.43 points per game across all competitions, winning 25 of his 63 matches, drawing 15 and losing 23.

Tensions between Amorim and senior club figures had become increasingly apparent in recent days.
On Friday, Amorim hinted at a strained relationship with United’s hierarchy, suggesting he would not be fully backed in the transfer market.
Following the Leeds draw, he further criticised the club’s structure, insisting he wanted to operate as a manager, “not just the coach”, and indicating he was prepared to leave when his contract expired in 18 months.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change,” the club said in a statement.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”
Amorim’s 14-month spell is the shortest reign of a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed just eight months into his tenure in 2014.
