The Super Eagles of Nigeria will battle South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein today.
The match is a critical test for Nigeria’s qualification hopes, which were reignited by a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday.
With only nine points left to play for, the Super Eagles, who currently have 10 points, are under immense pressure. They trail group leaders Bafana Bafana by six points, meaning a loss in Tuesday’s game could effectively end their chances of automatic qualification for a second consecutive World Cup.
Coach Eric Chelle acknowledged the high stakes of the match. “We have come here to play for the three points, so we will be sending out the team that will get the job done,” he stated.
“We are happy to have overcome Rwanda but we have to conquer here to be in a good position for the qualification.”
Bafana Bafana enters the match with a strong lead in Group C, sitting on 16 points.
They have maintained a perfect home record in the qualifiers, with victories over Benin, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
This performance has given their fans confidence they can avoid defeat against Nigeria, whom they have not lost to at home in a competitive match since 2013.
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong expressed confidence in his team’s focus and determination.
“We defeated them at the Africa Cup, but that is in the past,” he said, referencing their penalty shootout win over South Africa in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals.
“Our approach will be devoid of arrogance; we will play with level heads and go all out for victory.”
Only the top team in the group will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster believes the pressure is firmly on Nigeria.
“I don’t necessarily think there’s pressure on us,” said Foster.
“I think at the moment we are where we wanted to be in the group, and that’s a positive. The pressure is on the guys who are trying to get to us, but that doesn’t mean we should take our foot off the pedal.”
