The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has moved to capitalise on growing political uncertainty within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), formally inviting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the ruling party.
The overture, announced on Tuesday by Abdullahi Abbas, Kano State APC chairman, comes amid speculation that Yusuf may be considering a defection from the NNPP, a development that has reportedly unsettled the opposition party’s internal ranks.

In a statement issued in Kano, Abbas framed the invitation as part of the APC’s broader strategy to promote political unity and accelerate development in the state.
He said the party was willing to accommodate not only the governor but also other NNPP leaders, noting that their inclusion would strengthen governance and cooperation in Kano.
“The APC is ready to receive Governor Abba Yusuf with open arms so that, together, we can pool our strengths for the progress and stability of Kano State,” Abbas said.
He alluded to tensions said to be brewing within the NNPP over the governor’s alleged defection plans, particularly between Yusuf and the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who seems to be opposed to such a move.
According to Abbas, should the governor formally defect, he and other NNPP stalwarts would be welcomed into the APC under the leadership of former national chairman and ex-Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in what he described as an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared purpose.
Political watchers of unfolding development in the poltics of Kano state, says the APC’s invitation signals a calculated attempt to reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. If realised, Governor Yusuf’s defection could significantly shift alliances and alter the balance of power in one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states.
