The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has denied reports suggesting that some of its members are planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that neither the state nor national leadership is backing such a move.
The NNPP State Chairman, Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, while speaking with journalists on Monday, said the party remains united and firmly committed to its political vision for Kano State and Nigeria at large. He emphasised that the NNPP’s focus remains on people-centred governance, with a priority given to education, agriculture, and economic empowerment.
Dungurawa appealed to party members who may be considering leaving the NNPP, urging them to reconsider their decision and remain loyal to what he described as a party founded on social justice and inclusive development.

He also dismissed claims of internal divisions within the party, particularly allegations that some officials were attempting to create a rift between Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. According to him, such reports are baseless and aimed at undermining the party’s cohesion.
Despite the party’s position, some NNPP members have recently defected to the APC. Among them are Umar Bala Haruna, an aide to Governor Yusuf, and Muhammad Hussaini, the NNPP Organising Secretary of Bichi Ward. Hussaini cited the leadership of the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, as a major factor influencing his decision to join the APC.
The NNPP leadership, however, maintained that these defections do not reflect the position of the party and reaffirmed its resolve to remain united ahead of future political contests in the state.
