As the world revolutionalises amid technological advancement, web3 experts, artists and change-driven enthusiasts say Africa can leverage Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to support the repatriation of tangible physical art pieces from the diaspora.
This was made known during the recent convening in Lagos tagged ‘Ileya’ with the theme, ‘Post Capitalist desire,’ where experts examined post-capitalists desires and forge a way forward in exploring opportunities in the blockchain sphere through NFTs as well as regulating its usage.
“We are bringing back tangible physical art pieces from the diaspora, NFTs digital art pieces from artists abroad and in Lagos also,” Obafemi Odejayi, convener, Ileya, stated, disclosing that the initiative was geared towards bringing back ideas learnt from the diaspora.
Odejayi noted that NFTs can be used for community and social work like voting, skill building, among other initiatives. He stated that his target audiences are people who want change and are looking to rediscover the concept of ‘Demos’ in democracy.
“Individuals have too little power in the state now but with web3 tech, everyone is responsible to come together and drive meaningful change. The blockchain is transparent and reveals those who participate in its networks or otherwise,” Odejayi stated.
Ibrahim Ganiyu, lecturer and creative entrepreneur, stated that technology is a big tool that democratises the work environment, and that NFT crypto is a destination for the future and humanity.
“My goal is to push for this regularly. Blockchain is how we get our freedom and it’s the future where the world is going. This event is essentially exploring new technologies and helping to realise new ways of doing things,” Ganiyu stated.
Chimed Offor, artist, expounded the need to prioritise education, stating that when people get dissatisfied and frustrated they lash out through various evil vices. According to him, education helps people to build strong associations by brainstorming on the way forward. “It’s our job to reflect the society and make it obvious out there.”
