Four lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Thursday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) citing persisting internal crises and unresolved disputes within their former parties.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the House announced their defections after reading separate letters from the affected lawmakers during plenary on Thursday.
Among the Lawmakers who defected include Umezuruike Manuchim, who represents the Port Harcourt I federal constituency. He formally resigned his membership of the Labour Party (LP) and joined the APC. In his letter, Manuchim said the decision was not driven by personal interest but reflected the resolution of his constituents.
Emerengwa Sunday, the lawmaker representing Ikwerre/Emuoha federal constituency. Sunday resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect due to what he described as protracted, irreconcilable disputes and multiple court cases afflicting the party.
The Speaker also read a letter from Abiante Diagomie, who represents Opobo/Nkoro/Andoni federal constituency and chairs the House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning.
Abiante said he had resigned from the PDP to join the APC, due to unresolved disagreements and divisions within his former party. He added that the move reflected the wishes and aspirations of his constituents.
The fourth defection came from Boma Goodhead, lawmaker representing Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru constituency. In her letter, she also attributed her decision to prolonged and unresolved internal disagreements within the opposition party, PDP.
