The United States Consulate General in Lagos has announced plans to hold a pre-departure orientation session for Nigerian students who have secured valid U.S. student visas, as part of efforts to better prepare them for academic and social life in the United States.
The orientation is scheduled for Thursday, December 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will take place at the U.S. Consulate General, located at 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.
In a statement posted on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), the U.S. Mission in Nigeria said the session is open to all Nigerian holders of U.S. student visas.
Interested participants are required to register in advance through an online form made available on the U.S. Mission’s X page.
According to the consulate, the programme is designed to equip students with practical knowledge and guidance ahead of their departure.
EducationUSA alumni currently studying at various U.S. institutions will lead the sessions and share firsthand experiences on navigating life as international students.
“The pre-departure orientation will prepare you for life as a student in the United States. EducationUSA alumni studying at various U.S. institutions will share information on all you need to know before you depart for the U.S”, the registration form stated.
“Topics to be covered during the session include managing culture shock, maintaining healthy lifestyles to avoid common weight gain among new students, often referred to as the “Freshman 15” and building productive relationships with professors and peers. Participants will also receive guidance on securing on-campus jobs, becoming resident advisers, and accessing academic opportunities such as honours programmes, Dean’s List recognition, and additional scholarships.
