Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football, just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
His retirement ends a decade-long career with Nigeria and is a major setback for head coach Eric Chelle.
The 32-year-old defender confirmed his decision in an emotional post on Instagram.

“HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE,” Ekong said on his Instagram page.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will.
“Here’s to the next chapter.”
Troost-Ekong, who made his debut in 2015, quickly became a pillar in Nigeria’s defence, earning 83 caps and leading the team at various tournaments.
He was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria finished as runners-up, and also helped Nigeria secure third place at the 2019 edition in Egypt.
Ekong was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics and represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup.
The Al-Kholood defender was included in Eric Chelle’s provisional squad for AFCON 2025, making his sudden retirement even more surprising. His absence will be keenly felt, especially following the recent injury to young centre-back Benjamin Frederick.
Nigeria will compete in Group C at AFCON 2025, alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
