Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is reportedly set to retire from football after being diagnosed with heart abnormalities, following medical advice from his doctors and family.
The 34-year-old Sao Paulo player became unwell during physical testing at the club’s training centre on Tuesday and was rushed to the hospital after losing consciousness. He is currently receiving treatment in intensive care.
São Paulo confirmed the incident, “Oscar presented cardiological changes and was promptly attended to by the club’s medical professionals and doctors from Einstein Hospital Israelita.”

Oscar later took to Instagram to reassure fans, “Thank you so much for the messages and prayers. Everything will be fine, God willing.”
According to Globo Esporte, the Brazilian, who has been receiving treatment for a heart condition since August, has been strongly advised by his family to retire from football. He reportedly had a catheter fitted and is expected to end his career to prioritise his health and family life.
Oscar, who began his career at São Paulo before enjoying a successful stint at Chelsea and later earning around £150 million during eight years in China, returned to his boyhood club in December 2024 but has only made 21 appearances.
He last featured for São Paulo in August against Corinthians, where he suffered a fractured vertebra.
With a contract running until 2027, club officials are reportedly open to terminating his deal amicably, as he is “99 per cent likely” to retire.
Oscar and his wife, Ludmila Emboaba, have two children, and sources close to the family say they want him to focus on his recovery and long-term well-being.
