To promote work-life balance and embed it into its culture, Start Innovation Hub banned laptops for a full day, taking employees on a retreat.
The event included team-building, creative workshops, and surprise bonuses for outstanding employees.
Thirty-three staff members swapped office attire for relaxed shorts and polo shirts. They headed to the secluded tranquility of Iko Town in Eastern Obolo. This wasn’t just a staff retreat; it was the fifth edition of their annual ‘No Laptop Day.’
Start Innovation Hub’s annual event is not a casual vacation. It is an intentional policy decision, born from a hard-learned lesson.
Speaking from the beautiful coastal location, Hanson Johnson, chief executive officer, exuded the passion of a visionary leader.
He explained that ‘No Laptop Day’ was instituted following a crippling incident in September 2020, where the organisation was deprived of access to its electronic devices for a full week.
“It was a defining moment,” Johnson recalled. “We decided that the last Monday of every September, we would deliberately close our doors, leave the laptops at home, and focus on human connection.”
This unique policy, he notes, has become invaluable, offering staff a vital opportunity to unwind, bond, dine, and play offline.
It’s a key ingredient in strengthening their collective sense of belonging and teamwork. Johnson proudly championed Iko Beach, stating that such breathtaking environments, “are why we shouldn’t have to travel outside Akwa Ibom or Nigeria to find relaxation.”
*A million naira surprise*
While the day was filled with fun and team-building, it held an explosive secret. Towards the end of the day, when Johnson recognised excellence.
Saviour Henry was called out as the most outstanding, committed, and exceptional employee.
Receiving the award, Henry said, “I may be singled out today, but my standout performance is a reflection of the collaboration and collective approach of all my colleagues.”
