Newcastle United have completed a club-record £69m signing of Germany striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.
The fee surpasses the £63m Newcastle paid for Alexander Isak three years ago, making Woltemade the most expensive player in the club’s history.
The 23-year-old, capped twice by Germany, will wear the number 27 shirt but has not been registered in time to feature against Leeds United on Saturday.
Woltemade had attracted interest from Bayern Munich, but Newcastle moved quickly to beat the Bundesliga champions, agreeing to a fee with Stuttgart for the forward.
The signing could have further transfer implications, with Isak strongly linked with a move to Liverpool.
The Premier League champions had a £110m bid rejected earlier this month. While Newcastle’s capture of Woltemade may open the door, sources say Liverpool have yet to return with an improved offer.
