Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that Nigeria’s problems stem from its leadership rather than the constitution itself.
In a letter delivered on Wednesday at the National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy in Abuja, Obasanjo stressed that the true challenge does not lie in the constitution, but with the people tasked with enforcing and operating it.
Obasanjo highlighted that no matter how strong or flawed a constitution may be, the most important factor, based on his perspective and experience, is the individuals responsible for implementing it.
In a letter addressed to Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Chairman of the National Summit, Obasanjo expressed that his main focus is on the individuals who implement the constitution rather than calling for its replacement, stressing the importance of effective governance and the well-being of the people.
The former President emphasized that a nation’s constitution, as its foundational legal framework, must embody the country’s history, its people, and their hopes for the future.

He insisted that the constitution should be treated with utmost respect. Drawing from his own experience working within the Nigerian constitution, he acknowledged that some sections may require revision.
He noted that no constitution is flawless. More importantly, however, the key factor lies in those who interpret and apply the constitution.
He warned that even the strongest constitution can be twisted or abused by those in charge of enforcing it.
Obasanjo expressed greater concern about the leaders responsible for upholding the constitution, promoting good governance, and improving the lives of citizens.
He stated that regardless of any changes made to Nigeria’s constitution, if the people operating it over the last fifteen years continue in the same selfish, corrupt, and lawless manner, the welfare of Nigerians will continue to suffer.
“At this critical moment, the focus must be on those who manage the constitution,” he said. “When we have the right leaders in place, they will deliver constitutional reforms that truly reflect the needs of all Nigerians and help every citizen feel valued in the Nigerian project.”
