Popular activist and social media influencer, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan or VDM, who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday, will be released today, a source has revealed to Vanguard.
His release follows public outcry and protests that erupted in Abuja over his detention. According to Vanguard, VDM is expected to be charged in court on Thursday.
On Monday, large numbers of youths took to the streets in protest across the Federal Capital Territory, demanding his release and describing his continued detention as unlawful.
The protest drew support from notable figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, human rights advocate Richard Akinnola, Afrobeat star Davido, and nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest. They all condemned his arrest.
While the EFCC has not yet charged VDM in court, the agency has confirmed it is preparing multiple charges against him, including cyberstalking and related offences.
“We intend to file these charges in the coming days. Once that is done, you will be among the first to be informed,” an EFCC source told Vanguard.
The protesters, seen near Wuse by the Berger bridge, vowed to take their complaints to the Nigerian Human Rights Commission in Maitama.
