In a display of cultural unity, the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division joined their counterparts in other parts of West Africa to celebrate the 2023 West African Social Activities (WASA).
The event held at the headquarters of 3 Division Physical Training Ground Maxwell Khobe Cantonment Jos with enthusiasm and fervor, showcasing the rich diversity within the division, and highlighting the shared traditions and heritage.
Major General Abdusalami Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3 Division, seized the opportunity to emphasize the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the fight against criminality.
He underscored the need for synergy among various entities, stressing that united efforts contribute significantly to the overall progress and security of the division.
The GOC urged attendees to build on the spirit of collaboration established during the celebration, emphasizing that partnerships among stakeholders are crucial for addressing challenges and achieving common goals.
“This unique annual event which is celebrated in all Army formations and units, is usually organised to mark the end of the year’s training activities and to usher in a new phase of activities for the year ahead. We are indeed grateful to the Almighty God for keeping us alive to witness this celebration and I am particularly gladdened to see you and your families as well as friends well dressed in different attires.
“As we are all aware, the West African Social Activities is an age long tradition in the Nigerian army traceable to pre independence. The ceremony is part of the Nigerian Army’s custom ethics and tradition, organised to enable officers, soldiers, their families, as well as friends and invited guests to interact and make merry in a relaxed atmosphere. This is aimed at promoting comradeship to deepen as critical, strengthen unity amongst personnel, as well as promote civil military relations and showcase the beautiful cultural heritage of the barracks community.
“I am indeed pleased with the level of cooperation amongst security agencies and members of the public on the Plateau. No doubt, peace and security is very dear to all of us. I therefore urge us all to continue to work together as a team to continue to consolidate on the peaceful coexistence achieved in the recent past,” the GOC charged.
Abdusalami appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Lagbaja for his tremendous support towards ensuring improved working condition and the welfare of troops in 3 Division Nigerian Army as well as choosing 3 Division to host numerous training activities of the Nigerian Army in the year 2023.
In his speech, the Governor of Plateau State Caleb Mutfwang urged the Army, other security agencies and the citizens to work in harmony for the purpose of curbing criminality in the state.
Governor Mutfwang, represented by his Adviser on Security, Brig. General Gakji Shippi said the state government would always provide the needed requirement at its disposal to curb criminality in the state.
The governor added that the peaceful celebration of the 2023 WASA was a clear testimony the security agencies enjoy in the state.
“It is heartwarming to see friends and the good people of Plateau State celebrating with the military in a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. This is a clear testimony of the level of hospitality, support and cooperation that the people of Plateau State give to the security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army.
“The peace and security that has been enjoyed is as a result of the concerted efforts of the military and other security agencies in support of the government of Plateau State in its determination to restore the state to its glory of being the land of beauty and tourism. I want to assure everyone here that as a government we will continue to support the military and all security agencies in the state in order to sustain the peace we are enjoying today.
“I am indeed honored to be a part of this year’s occasion to celebrate the personnel of Three Division Nigerian Army who have sacrificed a lot to ensure peace in Plateau State, especially in recent times and indeed for the peace of the country,” the governor said.
He commended the security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army, for their doggedness, resilience and commitment to ensuring the security of lives and property of the people of the state.
The WASA celebration brought together military personnel, civilians, and representatives from different sectors, fostering an environment of understanding and cooperation.
The event featured traditional music, dance, and culinary delights from across the division creating an atmosphere of joy and unity.
As the festivities concluded, the 3 Division’s WASA celebration left a lasting impression, not only for its lively cultural showcase but also for the GOC’s impassioned plea for collaboration.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of solidarity in addressing regional issues and fostering a harmonious future for the country.
