Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has charged operatives of the various security and emergency agencies of the state government, as well as police officers attached to them to give law enforcement a human face.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge when he undertook the tour of the agencies on Tuesday. Among the agencies are Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Taskforce on Environmental and other Special Offences and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps .
Others include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency ( LASEMA), Fire Service, Nigeria Safety and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Building Control Agency. Most of these agencies operate from the Safety Arena at Bolade, Oshodi.
Addressing the personnel and field officers of the agencies at Oshodi, Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and other functionaries, asides the expectation from them to join forces to keep Lagos safe, it was also imperative that the embraced civility in the discharge of the functions.
“Governance is not about enforcement but correction and encouragement. We need to show empathy and sympathy.
Let Lagosians feel the positive impact of your service.
Where you need to correct, correct, where you need to encourage, encourage.
It’s only those who remain recalcitrant that must be made to obey our laws,” said Sanwo-Olu.
The governor, however, promised to look into complaints of logistical challenges and low funding of some of the agencies, and commended them for working with the government to keep Lagos safe for business and living.
