For their involvement in examination malpractices, the West Africa Examinations Council on Friday announced the withholding of the results of 180,205 of the candidates who sat for the May/June 2019 Senior School Certificate Examination.
Olu Adenipekun, Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, said the results, representing 11.33 percent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
Adenipekun while speaking at a press conference in Lagos said a total of 1,590,173 candidates registered and sat for the 2019, adding that the reported cases of malpractices were being investigated and reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course.
Adenipekun while giving a detailed statistics of the result disclosed that out of the number, 299 were visually challenged, 842 had impaired hearing, 158 had low vision, 75 were spastic cum mentally challenged and 85 were physically challenged.
He further said that a total of 1,596,161 candidates registered for the examination from 18,639 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria, while noting that 1,918 candidates with varying degrees of special needs were registered for the examination.
According to him, “Of that number, 1,590,173 candidates wrote the examination, comprising 822,098 males, and 768,075 females. This represents 51.70 per cent and 48.30 per cent respectively,”
Adenipekun disclosed that the committee’s decisions would be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools.
He enjoined candidates who sat the examination to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website within the next few hours.
